about

Shortly after the release of Charm, an album that would go on to make the 2007 Grammy short list and expose then 23-year-old Danny Swain to the world of MTV buzz and shiny record deals, the Savannah-based hip-hop artist quietly released his first instrumental album, Dream, Interrupted. The 23-track project was released exclusively in the U.K. and became a coveted collector’s album in the U.S. after Danny won MTV’s Best Music on Campus in 2007. The award promised a record deal, an EP release, and a music video, though Danny never saw the latter two materialize.

To be sure everything is 20/20 in retrospect, but Dream, Interrupted contains the kind of eerie foreshadowing on par with intellectual foreplay for English majors and colloquial hip-hop journalists alike. Atop choice samples of “Cry Of A Dreamer” by The Sylvers, the album opens with recorded excerpts from an interview with Marvin Gaye in which he remarks, “I want to stay with this music thing; it’s the only thing for me I think… Personal satisfaction is one of the few things that I think gives you peace of mind in this business.”

Danny goes on to enlist Bobby Womack, Teena Marie, and The Miracles among others to help tell his story of struggle and self-destiny, weaving all of his samples around the perfect production blend of percussive restlessness, satiny sax, refined mellow, and a Motown-inspired romantic awareness.

Potholes Music is proud to announce the rerelease of Dream, Interrupted into the wild for a whole new crew of curious listeners and daydreamers.

“Existence can be rearranged. A man can be many things. I am special and free. And the world is round round round.” ― Tom Robbins, Jitterbug Perfume
